A complete guide to Botox and dermal filler.

I hate the term "anti-aging". Aging is part of life and along with aging comes many wonderful things - success, wisdom, confidence, and a unique and special kind of beauty. Beauty is not confined to only the young - we have all seen women who become more beautiful, graceful and classically beautiful with age. The use of cosmetic injections is a great way for women to enhance and tweak that classic beauty.

The idea of getting cosmetic injectables seems scary to some people. However Botox and dermal fillers are common non-invasive cosmetic treatments used by many people all over the world. Below is a summary of everything you need to know when considering your treatment.

What is Botox?

Botox is a natural and purified protein used to relax facial muscles that cause wrinkles and lines. It is used to treat severe and moderate frown lines on the forehead and between the eyebrows as well as around the eyes. It is injected in small doses superficially into key muscles. Expect a total of 5 injections in the forehead and 6 around the eyes. It will give you a smooth, relaxed and beautiful look.

How much does Botox cost?

The price varies between providers and geographic areas. Some clinicians charge by the unit and others charge by the area. At Beautoxetc we charge by the area. Plan on spending about $290 on forehead and $200 on crows feet.

Who should or should not get Botox?

There is no specific age to start injections, although they will work better on lines that are newly developed or less deep. People who suffer from any muscle diseases such as Guillain Barre should speak with their neurologist before getting Botox.

What are the downsides of Botox treatment?

Unlike dermal fillers (see below), Botox is temporary, requiring repeat injections throughout the year. They can also be painful, as a fine needle is used to administer. Lastly, bruising is always a potential downside (though temporary).

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid gel, a naturally-occurring substance in the skin that contributes to volume and hydration. They are designed to temporarily correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and provide volume to cheeks and lips.

How are they applied?

Fillers are administered through a series of tiny facial injections on specific areas of the face and lip if desired. Various types of fillers are available, and each is designed for a specific purpose, such as lifting the cheeks, augmenting lips, and smoothing out deep wrinkles.

What are the downsides to fillers?

You may experience swelling, redness, tenderness or bruising for a few days after. Rarely the clinician may inject into a blood vessel causing damage to the skin. Scrupulous and careful technique is critical to avoid this.

How long do they last?

Depending on the type of filler they usually last between 6 and 18 months.

Who should not get fillers?

If you have an active cold sore anywhere on your face definitely wait. An injection could cause and outbreak. You should not get fillers if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How much does filler cost?

Fillers cost between $500 and $1600 depending on the area and amount of filler used.
